​MOLDOVAN ATHLETE WINS BRONZE AT OLYMPICS

Moldovan canoeist Serghei Tarnovschi has won bronze medal at Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in the category Men’s canoe single at a distance of 1 thousand meters.

The golden medalist in canoe became Sebastian Brendel from Germany (time 3:56.926), silver went to the Brazilian Queiroz Dos Santos Isaquitas (3:58.529). Tarnovcschi with the result of 4:00.852 left behind the Russian Ilya Shtokalov (4:00.963). For identifying the bronze medal winner the jury needed to check the photo-finish.

Serghei Tarnovschi was born on June 24, 1997 in Ukraine, but due to disagreements with the country’s Canoe Sprint Federation decided to participate in Olympics from Moldova together with his brother Oleg. In 2014, he won two golden and three silver medals at world and European youth championships, as well as got gold in Nanjing Youth Games. In 2015 he won bronze medal in Milan and was qualified at the Olympics. In June 2016, he won silver at World Championship in Moscow with a result of 3:52:164. He was declared 2015 Moldova’s best athlete.

Serghei Tarnovschi did not finish his performance at Olympics yet. Together with his brother Oleg he will compete in the category Men’s double canoe at a distance of 1 thousand meters. The qualifying sprints are planned for August 19, while the finals will take place on August 20.
