​SEMINAR ABOUT MOLDOVAN JEWS IN 20TH CENTURY HELD FOR SCHOOL TEACHERS

“The History of Moldovan Jews in 20th Century” is the name of a seminar for teachers of lyceums and gymnasiums, which is being conducted by the International Center for Professional Development (ICPD) in Chisinau and the international organization Centropa with support of German Foreign Ministry and Education Ministry of Moldova.

The seminar is attended by specialists in the field of education, civil activists and journalists from Moldova, Ukraine, Germany and Poland.

“The seminar, conducted within public events on the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, will be based on evidences of Moldovan Jews, who survived the tragedy. One of such stories will be presented at the screening of the film “Returning to Rivne” – the most peculiar movie of Centropa’s information basis”, said ICPD Director Galina Karger said.

The main heroes of the film are Shelly Vainer and Raya Kiznerman, today living in Australia, who are returning to the city of Rivne (Rovno), which was in the territory of Poland in the wartime, while now belongs to Ukraine.

“In 1941, 20 thousand Jews were living there. But when Hitler’s troops broke into the city, according to the plan, each Jew should have been killed. Shelly and Raia will tell how they managed to survive during the Nazi occupation”, Karger said.

The seminar also includes historic lectures, presentations by teachers from Ukraine, Poland, Romania and Germany. They will tell about their experience in teaching these historical events. Also, Centropa Director Edward Serotta will take the floor, as well as the organization’s head for educational programs in Europe Fabian Ruehle, Rivne State University professor Maxim Gon.

Infotag’s dossier: The Centropa is a non-profit organization, a Jewish historical institute, dedicated to preserving over 1.2 thousand of 20th century family stories and 20 thousand photos from Central and Eastern Europe and Balkan countries, as well as disseminating these stories and photos through films, books and exhibitions. It has offices in Vienna, Budapest, Hamburg and Washington.
