22 february, 2017

The Government of Moldova is preparing a new National Plan of activities in the human-right sphere that will contain a separate chapter on “national and ethnic minorities”, Moldova’s Political Representative at the Transnistria negotiations, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Affairs Gheorghe Balan announced on Tuesday at the Youth Forum of national, ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities.

He reminded that the question of national minorities is indeed present in the Government’s work program.

“The new Plan adoption should permit to better implement the Council of Europe Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities (FCNM) and the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination”, he said.

The Deputy Premier requested the civil society to avoid behaving in a manner that may lead to a society split, including an ethnic split.

“The languages and traditions of national minorities are parts to our common culture and they should be treated with respect. The country leadership is counting primarily on the youth free of prejudices, youth participating in the processes taking place in the country and its social life, so that the young people’s potential could contribute to the Moldovan State development”, said Gheorghe Balan.

He reiterated the importance of creating optimum conditions for the studying and using the country’s official language that “serves a link in the building of a powerful democratic and viable state”.
