MOLDOVA SLIDES 4 POSITIONS DOWN IN PRESS FREEDOM RATING

26 april, 2017

The Republic of Moldova has found itself 4 positions lower than last year on a new press freedom rating run by the prestigious international organization “Reporters without Borders”, and is standing now on the 80th place among 180 countries.

The Organization calculates the countries’ standings on the basis of a number of parameters like media diversity and independence, journalists’ work conditions and self-censorship, legal protection and institutional transparency etc.

The leaders of the rating are Norway, Sweden and Finland, and the poorest standings are with Eritrea and North Korea.

The Organization experts are pointing out high political polarization of the Moldovan mass media, a chronic instability in the republic, and the oligarchs’ stifling power. The researchers draw attention that the media’s editorial policy is closely linked with the political and economic interests of media owners, so editorial freedom and transparency of media ownership are remaining key objectives to reach.

Moldova’s next-door neighbor Romania has improved its media situation having climbed 3 positions up against the previous year, reaching the 46th place. The Ukrainian mass media have also improved their rating by 5 positions – up to the 102nd place. And Russia has remained on the 148th position.
