01 august, 2017

The Moldovan team managed to get only two medals at the European Youth Olympic Festival, which finished in the city of Gyor in Hungary. Judo fighter Petru Pelevan was awarded with silver in weight category of 66 kg, while his colleague Eugen Matveiciuc – bronze in the category of 81 kg.

Moldova is participating in these competitions for already the 13th time. Moldovan athletes were competing in six types of sports: athletics (8), judo (6), swimming (5), tennis (4), cycling (3), rowing (3). In total, the team was made of 29 people.

At the previous sport forum in 2015 in Tbilisi (Georgia), Moldova demonstrated best result over the entire history of its participation in the EOYF: five golden and two silver medals, occupying the high 6th place in the team standings.

However, it should be taken into account that over one-half of these were due to the swimmer Alexei Sanicov, who got three golden and one silver medal.

“This year’s result at the European Youth Olympic Festival should also be regarded as positive”, said President of the National Olympic and Sports Committee, double Olympic champion Nicolae Juravschi.

According to him, the most important is not the number of medals, but the fact that young athletes got priceless experience of participation in major international tournaments.
