POLAND TO RESTORE CHAPEL AT CATHOLIC CEMETERY IN CHISINAU

09 august, 2017

Polish artists and architectures will restore the Ohanovich family chapel with the support of the Polish Government. The chapel was built in 1913 at the Chisinau catholic cemetery; it has significantly been destroyed because of improper care.

According to the Polish Embassy, the chapel restoration will be held in the framework of the project on cooperation, signed three years ago by the Moldovan Ministry of Culture, the National Heritage of Poland, Chisinau Primaria [city government] and the Embassy of Poland in Moldova.

“The chapel is a historical monument built on the graves of the Ohanovich family. This family owned land and estate Mindik in the north of Moldova. The headstone art is characterized by its originality, but it is in poor condition. That is why we decided to restore and save it with the help of our experts. The tombstone is unique; we have never seen anything like this in other places”, said Jerzy Stankiewicz, charge d'affaires of the Embassy of Poland in Moldova.

According to the Polish representative of the National Heritage of Poland, Mikhail Michalski the team has been working on restoration of tombstones in Moldova since 2015.

“During this time, three tombstones have been restored. It is planned to restore 70 monuments, 4-5 per year, in cooperation with the Moldovan authorities. With increasing work, the amount of labor will also increase. Thee tombstones are true works of art. I am glad that the Moldovan authorities do not forget about the Poles who live here”, he said.

Infotag’s dossier: There are about 3 thousand graves at the Catholic cemetery in Chisinau; 15 of them are the graves of immigrants from Poland.
