MOLDOVA JOINS GLOBAL CAMPAIGN FOR COMBATING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

27 november, 2017

Moldova joined the global campaign “UNiTE to End Violence Against Women”, which is annually held all around the world in the period of November 25 – World Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women, through December 10 – World Human Rights Day.

In a video-address on Facebook, Speaker of the Parliament Andrian Candu called on all country citizens to join the campaign and fight to eliminate violence against women.

“I have never beaten my wife. We never shouted on one another. I respect the woman, who is near me not only because she is mother of my children. I respect my daughter and I do not think I waste time talking to her instead of slapping her to make her understand me”, Candu said.

He also said he organized and attended 10 hearings in raions on the topic of violence against women.

“I saw that this problem is still relevant for Moldova. One should not remain aside when he witnesses violence against women, including family violence. This is our problem. We must respond, call the police. The fact that I do not beat my wife does not mean I have the right to stand aside”, Candu said.

Before, the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) announced about the participation in the campaign to liquidate violence against women. At the last-week press conference, PAS leader Maia Sandu said that within two weeks the party will organize several information events and roundtables. This past Saturday, the PAS conducted a flashmob in the pedestrian street on Chisinau, dedicated to the start of the campaign.
