NEXT SATURDAY WILL SEE SOLEMN MEETING DEDICATED TO 100TH ANNIVERSARY, WHICH SOME HISTORIANS REGARD TO BE A DUBIOUS HOLIDAY

29 november, 2017

On December 2, a big solemn meeting will be held in Chisinau on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the Moldovan Democratic Republic (MDR), President Igor Dodon wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

In his words, “That was an important-most event for all of us – for the Moldovan people and the Moldovan State”.

“On the sidelines of the meeting, various exhibitions will be opened and many actions dedicated to the essential historic event will be organized, including e.g. the ‘first night’ of Part 2 of the new documentary film “The History of Moldova” covering the period from the foundation of the Principality of Moldavia and until the signing of the Bucharest Peace Treaty of 1812. The meeting and the accompanying events will be attended by Moldovan officials, civil society representatives, diplomats, experts and other esteemed guests, including from foreign countries”, wrote the head of state.

In early October, the President formed a working group for preparation of this holiday. Dodon stressed then that the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the Moldovan Democratic Republic and appointment of the first government of Moldova is an event of an exceptional significance, important for the continuity of the statehood of the Moldovan people in the historic and ethnic context of its development as a nation”.

The Parliament and Government then refused to delegate their representatives to the commission and did not support the President’s initiative, and a certain part of historians and politicians even subjected Igor Dodon to a severe criticism. Those historians stated: “This date is dubious for the statehood of Moldova’s, and it can be celebrated only by unionists [adherents to the idea of Unire – Moldova’s unification with Romania]”.

Political scientist and anthropologist Mark Tkachuk named the anniversary celebration idea “an ordinary imbecility”.

“To mark the anniversary of the Moldovan Democratic Republic, which was finally proclaimed on March 27, 1918, means to mark the 100th anniversary of the unification of Bessarabia with Romania! Exactly on that date the Sfatul Tarii [Council of the Country] voted for unification of the MDR with Romania. It is well known how all that was happening – in the presence of the Romanian Military Command and at gun points. This entire story has not seen even a single correction over the past century. In other words, this “remarkable event” is not at all about a “continuity of the Moldovan people” – it is about a betrayal of this very Moldovan people”, stated Mark Tkachuk.

In his opinion, the official celebration of the MDR 100th anniversary by the Republic of Moldova authorities “is indeed providing for unionists an important-most argument in favor of the “historic legitimacy of the Great Unification [Marea Unire] of March 27, 1918”.

Infotag’s dossier: The Moldovan Democratic Republic was proclaimed on December 2, 1917 in the territory of the former Bessarabian province of the Russian Empire – initially as a part of the Russian Republic, but on January 24, 1918 the MDR declared its independence. However, according to the decision taken by the Sfatul Tarii [Council of the Country – parliament], on March 27, 1918 Bessarabia was included into the Kingdom of Romania, so the Moldovan Democratic Republic ceased its existence.
