OFFICIAL MOLDOVAN POPULATION SIZE TO BE REVISED

02 march, 2018

Official data on the population number in Moldova will be revised by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) with the support of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in accordance with the data of the 2014 housing and population census.

According to the NBM, the recalculation will be made in accordance with UN recommendations and will last till autumn. Not only the number of people with residence in the Republic of Moldova (over 12 months) will be revised, but also the basic rates of demographic statistics, macroeconomic rates, such as the GDP per capita, concrete health indexes, education and the labor market.

"The process of revising the population size implies the availability of population number in a certain day, as well as the vital statistics. The biggest problem in recounting of the population is the assessment of the annual migration flow. In this context we need authorities' support, in particular, assistance of the Ministry of the Interior", said NBS Director Vitalie Valcov.

According to the UNFPA representative in Moldova Rita Columbia, the availability of quality statistical data has a decisive role for achieving country development goals, satisfying real needs of the population and the implementing of citizens' rights.

New precise data are necessary to the Government for developing state policy, the 2030 National Strategy for Moldova Development, as well as for fulfillment of liabilities on the EU-Moldova Association Agreement.

The project "Revision of Population Indexes on the basis of the 2014 census" is supported by the UNFPA and the SDC and is designed for the period of February 2018 through January 2019.

As Infotag has already reported, as of the beginning of 2014, the number of population of Moldova, calculated on the basis of the data on birth and death, accounted for 3.55 million people without taking into account the population of Transnistria and Bender. The general population census, conducted on May 12 through 25, 2014, showed the size of population at 2.91 million people, according to preliminary data, while after that the figure was corrected to 2.80 million.
