POLICE LAUNCHES NATIONAL CAMPAIGN "SMILE TO A TOY!"

30 november, 2018

The national campaign "Smile to the toy!", initiated by the General Police Inspectorate (GPI), started in Moldova on Friday.

At the Friday's press conference on this occasion, GPI Head Gheorghe Cavcaliuc said that only in 2018 over 1.4 thousand minors got into road accidents, were involved or witnessed risk situations (fires, violence in family and in the street).

"Children got in road accidents 118 times and witnessed violence in 300 cases. This is just official data, when police arrived to the place of incident. In Germany, in such situations police officers are using psychological approach in work with minors, which means trustful communication. They give to children a toy they obligatory have in each patrol car", the official said.

At the proposal of the General Police Inspectorate leadership, such a practice will be introduced in Moldova.

"We believe that this experience of Europeans is vitally important. Doctors will confirm that often children who faced a situation of risk, need long time to recover from the stress, sometimes they even got pathologies. Children suffer from nightmares, have fear of car. Often, a timely-said kind word, a toy given to the child, can help avoiding psychological shock", Cavcaliuc said.

According to him, toys may also appear as obligatory element in other emergency services, for example firefighters and ambulance.

Deputy Head of the GPI confirmed that 9 thousand police officers will be trained in the field of psychological communication with minors.

The campaign's partners are public associations "Caring Grannies" and Terra-Valahia, as well as the Moldovan Metropolitanate and several private enterprises and firms.
