MOLDOVAN WINES PRESENTED IN JAPAN

The Embassy of Moldova to Japan presented the goods of over 20 Moldovan winemaking companies to Japanese importers. The event was organized with the assistance of the Moldova Agriculture Competitiveness Project (MAC-P), financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Swedish Government.

According to organizers, the event which gathered over 150 people was held for promoting the Moldovan winemaking brand and the very country as an attractive tourist destination.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan Kenji Yamada pointed at friendly relations between the two states, especially in the field of agriculture.

"The Japanese Government traditionally supports the Moldovan agriculture. The Moldovan wines was popular among the nobility and royal families of Europe, and now it remains an important part of industry, ensuring 3.2% of the GDP and 7.5% of the republic's total export volumes", he said.

MAC-P Deputy Director Diana Lazar said that by means of such projects on promoting goods, which are Moldova's national pride, the sales markets are diversified, which allows reducing the dependence on traditional markets, as well as promoting the republic as tourist destination.

Director of the Moldovan winery "Castel MIMI" Cristina Frolov said that the Japanese market is gradually opening for the Moldovan winemaking products, while such promotion events of domestic producers and the support for coming to foreign markets allow feeling themselves as a part of a single brand and raising the company recognition.

In 2017, Japan imported 284 million liters of wine worth US$1.6 billion. For the first time the brand "Wine of Moldova. A Legend Alive" was presented in Japan in 2016 at the exhibition Vinexpo Tokyo, after which the exports of Moldovan wine started to grow rapidly, reaching US$800 thousand last year.
