ACADEMY OF SCIENCES IS A POLITICIZED INSTITUTION – HISTORIAN

14 march, 2019

Academician Valeriu Pasat refused to participate in the contest for the post of Moldovan Academy of Sciences (MAS), as he states the institution is completely politicized.

His candidature was proposed at the general meeting of the MAS Department for Social, Economic, Humanitarian Sciences and Arts.

“I thank everyone for the provided support and appreciation, but I refuse to participate in this show. We have to pay attention to another fact. The MAS is a state institution, which should be autonomous and independent from the authorities. We are politicized; back several years ago I already warned that if the MAS politicization does not stopp, we will be unable to stop the corruption. The Academy will simply disappear”, Pasat said.

According to him, this is not the election of MAS president, but a show, in which it is already known who and how will win. He made an allusion that everything was agreed in order that elections of the MAS president to be won by the current MAS Deputy President Ion Tighineanu.

“I thank those who want to propose me for this post, but I cannot agree to participate in this show. I can only accept participation in a transparent contest, in which there is no politics”, said the academician.

Thus, the voting bulletins for electing MAS president included just one candidate – Ion Tighineanu. As a result of secret voting, he got 17 of 25 votes.

The post of MAS president became vacant after Gheorghe Duca tendered resignation, explaining it with bad state of health. A criminal case on accusation of corruption was started against him and his wife. They are accused of abuse of power, which led to large-scale material damage. The new president will be elected at the general meeting of the MAS assembly.
