MOLDOVAN SOCIALISTS TAKE COURSE FOR INTEGRATION INTO CUSTOMS UNION

29 september, 2014

At the 12th congress of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), held in Chisinau last Sunday, the party took course officially for Moldova’s integration into the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan and for annulment of the Association Agreement, which Moldova signed with the European Union last June 27.

PSRM Chairman MP Igor Dodon stated at the congress that Moldova has found itself at the crossroads.

“The republic has to make its choice while being in the epicenter of a second round of cold war and of pro-European unionists getting increasingly active. We believe that our political duty is to choose traditional economic and cultural ties with Russia, to choose Orthodoxy as a moral orientation for a majority of our citizens, as well as Moldova’s statehood, sovereignty and neutrality”, said the party leader.

Igor Dodon voiced confidence that the country advancement to the European Union will inevitably lead to a final territorial split of the republic.

“That’s why we suggest preserving the country through its federalization, restoring its inter-ethnic harmony and social peace, which the Moldovan society lacks so much”, said the PSRM leader.

Dodon said that the Socialists will run for Parliament under the slogan of “Moldova! Moldovans! Moldovan!”

“We shall come into power and shall start rehabilitating the national economy and pulling the country out of the crisis. The orientation to the East, to great and friendly Russia and a team of economists-professionals will bring Moldova to a recovery and its regaining the glory of a land of plenty and prosperity”, said the party leader.

The PSRM congress was attended, among many foreign guests, by Sergey Mironov, a deputy of the Russian State Duma [parliament] and the Chairman of “The Just Russia” party. He said that the sharp turn towards Europe, made by the powers that be in Ukraine, has led to society radicalization, to a factual split of the country and to a chaos.

“It is my conviction that the Party of Socialists’ ideas and the republic’s Eurasian vector of development will be supported by an overwhelming majority of Moldova citizens. Your electoral victory is near”, stressed Sergey Mironov.

The congress approved the list of the party’s candidates for Parliament, having placed on the top positions the PSRM leader Igor Dodon, former Prime Minister of Moldova MP Zinaida Grechanaya, former Moldovan ambassadors to Russia Andrei Neguta and Vladimir Turcan, political scientist Bogdan Tardea, and the leader of the United Gagauzia civil society organization Fyodor Gagauz.
