EUROPEAN PARLIAMENTARIANS URGE MOLDOVA TO PROCEED WITH REFORMS

05 february, 2016

Moldova must continue reforms, including by means of implementing the EU-Moldova Association Agreement and of ensuring economic stability so as to become a successful partner and get closer to the European Union, it was said in the meeting Parliament Chairman Andrian Candu held with a European Parliament delegation here Friday.

The guests were interested to learn more about the political and socio-economic situation in the country and the progress of the reforms stipulated by the Association Agreement.

Speaker Candu said that the political, economic and social challenges Moldova is facing can be overcome only by implementing in-depth structural reforms, particularly in the spheres of the judiciary, banking and finance, and in struggle against corruption.

“By a prompt implementation of these reforms the Government, acting team-like with the Parliament, intends to restore citizens’ trust. Moldova counts on the European Union’s backing in accordance with the “more for more” principle: the more reforms implemented – the more will be the support”, said Candu.

The interlocutors discussed also the draft Laws on Integrity already approved by the Government, the so-called ‘energy package’, a new Law on the Prosecution Service, and investigation into the siphoning off a billion euros from Moldovan banks.

The delegation includes Heido Hautala – Co-Chair of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly; Rebecca Harms – Co-Chairwoman of the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance; and Peter Eriksson – a EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee member.
