BASARABEASCA-BEREZINO RAILROAD SECTION MAY BE REHABILITATED

04 august, 2016

The railroad branch between the Moldovan station Basarabeasca and the Ukrainian Berezino in Odessa oblast [region] may be rehabilitated, which will give Moldovan linertrains the possibility to directly access the Ukrainian port Reni.

According to the Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure, this was the main topic of discussion at the meeting of Deputy Minister of Transport Sergiu Botezatu, Director of the National Railroad Company of Moldova (CFM) Iurie Topala, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Moldova Ivan Gnatishin, Supreme Rada [Ukraine’s parliament] MP Anton Kisse, Deputy Chairman of the Odessa Regional Council Iury Dimchoglo and Ukrainian Embassy Advisor for Trade Economic Issues Valery Kolomiitsev.

Stakeholders spoke for cooperation with European partners for attracting transit cargoes for railroad transportation, which is profitable both for Moldova and for Ukraine.

Ukrainian Ambassador noticed the productivity and efficiency of working meetings, organized by leadership of the Moldovan branch ministry. Guests also assessed the condition of Moldovan railroads and spoke for cooperation development and share of experience in the field of transport and road infrastructure.

As Infotag has already reported, the Basarabeasca-Berezino branch railroad was active until 1999, but then it was dismantled due to lack of cargo flow. This was a direct way from Moldova to Odessa ports. It is important from the point of view of the opportunity of connecting the two countries in detour of Transnistria. It was supposed that rehabilitation works will start in summer 2016. In total, about 20 km of railroad should be laid in the territory of Ukraine and about 1.5 km – in Moldova. Before, CFM Director Iurie Topala said that the rehabilitation of the railroad section in the Moldovan territory will demand about 2-4 weeks of work.

In a recent interview to Ukrainian media, he said that the Berezino-Basarabeasca line will optimize and intensify trade relations between Moldova and Ukraine.

“I hope works will start in the nearest future and will become a new milestone in the history of our main railway line”, Topala said.
