17 january, 2017

Moldova remains one of the largest consumers of Ukrainian dairy products, despite the restrictions on its supplying, introduced in 2016.

According to the neighboring country Tax Service, supplying of Ukrainian dairy products accounted for 109.2 thousand tons, which is 9% less than the 2015 rate. In money terms, the exports of milk products accounted for nearly US$158 million.

At the same time, the exports of milk and non-condensed cream grew to 10.5 thousand tons from 6.9 thousand tons over three years. 50.4% (US$2.7 million) of export gain came from supplying to Moldova, 26.3% (US$1.4 million) – to Georgia and 8% (US$0.4 million) – to Libya.

As for the cheese, its exports from Ukraine fell 26% over the previous year – to 8.1 thousand tons. Its major buyers were Kazakhstan (US$13.1 million; 54%), Moldova (US$6.5 million; 27%) and Egypt (US$1.9 million; 8%).

Infotag’s dossier: The Moldovan Government introduced restrictions on a number of Ukrainian goods, including on meat and dairy products, in May 2016. Certain quotes were established for these imports, while at exceeding the quotes, 10-20% duty is applicable. The decision was taken at the initiative of domestic producers for protecting the internal market and expired at the end of 2016. Ukrainian authorities regarded the measures, taken by Chisinau, as unlawful and unjustified and welcomed their canceling in 2017.
