MOLDOVA TO HAVE A MARITIME AGENCY SUBORDINATE TO TRANSPORT MINISTRY

24 march, 2017

Moldova will soon get a new structure – a Maritime Agency. The creation of such is provided in a draft law, approved by the Government.

The agency will be created on the basis of the state enterprise “Register of Ships” and the Giurgiulesti Port Captain’s Service and will be subordinate to the Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure. Its activities will be organized on the basis of the principle of self-financing, while its aim is to develop and implement state policies in the field of sea transport and inland waterways. Besides, employees of the new agency will be responsible for monitoring the observance of international agreements in the field of water transport, ensuring efficiency and functionality of Giurgiulesti port.

The Transport Ministry maintains that by means of a Sea Agency, Moldova will manage to reduce the number of ships under Moldovan flag, which currently do not correspond with international convention requirements. It is also about ships, which enter the Giurgiulesti Port and jeopardize the region’s environment.

According to the Ministry, 40% of internal trade goods and 70% of goods, designed for export, are being transported by sea.

Moldova is not considered a sea country as it does not have direct outlet to the sea, but the country’s southern-most point is situated on the Danube River, where at a bank stretch of about one kilometer wide, Moldova has built its Giurgiulesti river port through which ships can easily reach the Black Sea.
