AGRICULTURE MINISTRY SATISFIED WITH 2017 HARVEST

The agricultural year 2017 was successful due to rains and the implementation of new technologies on adapting the branch to climate changes, said general state secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Iurie Usurelu at the Monday’s press conference.

According to him, autumn 2016 was dry, which negatively influenced first-group field crops, though the wet winter balanced the damage. Also, Moldova faced unexpected snowfall in April, which partially hindered the pollination of orchards.

“Due to operative intervention of profile associations, the damage from April snowfall was reduced to a minimum, specialists gave to horticulturists recommendations on protecting plantations”, he said.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Ion Parea said that wheat yield accounted for 3.8 tons/hectare. In some raions, in particular, in Ocnita, the yield exceeded 5 t/ha. In total, the wheat harvest accounted for 1.17 million tons, over 70% of which – food wheat. The barley harvest exceeded 248 thousand tons, yield – 3.3 t/ha, which is 0.4 tons/ha more than a year before.

“The corn harvesting will finish soon. According to preliminary data, its yield grew 1.5 t/ha – to 4.5 t/ha. The harvest of soybean accounted for 57 tons, while 1.6 t/ha. Due to the reduction of wheat area, the sunflower plantations were raised. Its harvest accounted for 2.1 t/ha, which is 240 kg more than in 2016”, he said.

Parea said that the rapeseed yield accounted for 2.5 t/ha. The sugar beet yield accounted for 35-41 t/ha. According to forecasts, the volume of sugar in the country will exceed 100 thousand tons, which will not only allow ensuring internal demands, but also exporting it.

He also said that according to preliminary data, the fruit harvest will account for approximately 600 thousand tons, while vegetables – 760 thousand tons.
