FABLAB PRODUCTION LABORATORY OPENS IN CHISINAU

A production laboratory FabLab opened in Moldova Technical University on the basis of the Tekwill informational technology training center. It was opened with the financial support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Swedish Government.

University President Viorel Bostan said at the opening ceremony that the FabLab is a platform for cooperation between artistic, academic and private environment. It will allow students engineers, as well as architects and designers to implement the planned projects.

"The laboratory is provided with equipment, which will help students create prototypes of their inventions and test them in order that later to become successful entrepreneurs", he explained.

According to him, the Chisinau FabLab is one of the region's largest, while given the local students' potential, the lab will become the most successful as well.

Minister of Education, Culture and Research Monica Babuc reminded that the university is already hosting Tekwill, a training center in the field of design ZIPhouse, while now it was joined by the FabLab, which is an impressive result of university growth.

According to her, for developing higher education, the republic has to cooperate with external partners, create conditions for interaction between Moldovan talented youth with their foreign colleagues.

USAID Deputy Administrator for Europe and Eurasia Brock Bierman said that his organization regards the technologies as a future for Moldova, thus it has invested in the FabLab, as well as in other technological centers.

"We have to create a platform and conditions, due to which inventors to be able to create projects. This is what the FabLab is doing for experimenters not only in Moldova, but all around the world also", he said.

Bierman said that the FabLab in Chisinau is a part of a large network that includes 1.3 thousand laboratories all around the world, including in the Massachusetts Technological University.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sweden to Moldova Signe Burgstaller said that the laboratory will allow young people seek solutions that can change lives, as the research and innovations directly influence the prosperity of any nation.

"Moldova has a great potential, as there are many young and talented persons with good ideas in the country. The most important is the creation of a favorable environment, which will allow the young generation to implement its potential at home, in Moldova", she said.

The ambassador expressed hope that laboratories will inspire a large number of young men and women to choose profession in the field of informational technologies and creative industry.

The laboratory is equipped with 3D printers, laser-cutting devices, milling machines, sewing and embroidery machineries and robotics sets, as well as other equipment.

Before, FabLab laboratories opened in Ungheni, Drochia and Cahul on the basis of local raion libraries.
