SELLING AND USING OF PLASTIC DISHES MAY BE BANNED IN MOLDOVA IN 2021

04 octomber, 2018

The parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Administration, Regional Development, Environment Protection and Climate Change approved on Wednesday amendments to the legislation that provide the prohibition of using and selling disposable plastic utensils in Moldova starting from 2021.

According to the document, it is proposed to ban disposable dishes, glasses and cocktail tubes, except those made of biodegradable plastic. The breaching of these provisions implies a penalty worth 4.5 thousand lei for physical persons and 12 thousand lei - for legal persons.

According to authors, the non-recyclable plastic objects are the main source of waste in localities, while their burning leads to poisoning emissions to the atmosphere. Authors of the initiative propose to use carton, corn flour, sugar bean, apple peelings and other organic substances for producing packaging, alternative to the plastic.

Before, the national legislation was replenished with the provisions, which prohibit the using and selling of thin plastic sacks starting from January 1, 2019, while starting from 2020 - all other types of plastic sacks.

In accordance with the 2014-2023 Environment Strategy, the environment protection is an issue of global importance, which should become a national priority, as it is directly targeted on the improvement of people's life and health.
