JAPANESE COMPANY TO KEEP HELPING MOLDOVA IN IMPROVING CANINE SERVICE

The Japan Tobacco International (JTI) company will continue providing assistance to the Moldovan Customs Service in modernization of the canine service on the border.

According to the press release, one of Customs Service’s heads Grigore Ionitov met with representative of the Japanese corporation Nicolae Corlateanu. He reported that 207620 cigarettes were seized at the border within the period of January 1 through March 11, 2019, which is less than over the same period of 2018. What is worth mentioning is that 78% of tobacco products (a part of which are counterfeit) were found by trained dogs.

According to him, on the basis of operative information from Romanian colleagues, the number of Moldovan counterfeit cigarettes, detained by them also fell 8.1% year to date.

Ionitov thanked the foreign company for the technical support, provided to the service, stressing that the licensed suppliers of tobacco products are the Moldova’s second largest taxpayers among economic agents.

The Moldovan Customs Service is cooperating with the JTI since 2008. Within the partnership, the company transmitted to the customs special vehicles, as well as a large number of modern equipment, including infrared scanners, endoscopes, computer equipment. The CTI Corporation also contributed to development of the Moldovan canine service.
