GOVERNMENT DIRECTS ADDITIONAL 114 MILLION LEI TO ROAD REPAIRING AND MAINTENANCE

26 september, 2019

The Road Fund money will be redistributed in a way that additional 114 million lei to be directed to works on repairing and maintenance of public roads, while the total sum of allocations for these purposes to account for not less than 322.2 million lei.

A corresponding decision was taken by the Government at the initiative of the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure given the early worsening of road condition due to poor financing of their maintenance and repairing.

Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Vadim Brinzan stressed that the program “Good Roads for Moldova” will suffer no changes in 2019, but the responsible agencies will toughen control over the work process and its quality.

According to him, the 2019 Program for periodic repairing of national, local, communal roads and streets implied a budget of 1.7 billion lei, but in fact the sum accounted for 950 million lei, which besides were distributed unfairly, depending on local leadership’s adherence to the previous authorities.

Prime Minister Maia Sandu said that starting from 2020 a mechanism must be implemented which takes into account the number of citizens and condition of roads in localities, but not the political color.

“We will allocate the money, while the mayor and the community will decide by themselves which roads to repair. We should analyze and find out which companies are conducting quality repairs and which are not, because this is waste of state money”, she said.

The premier demanded from the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure to conduct control of road repairing, implemented by each contractor in part.

“We will raise investments in repairing of roads, but we want to know who of operators is doing their work qualitatively, and who – is not, to include the latter in a black list”, Sandu said.
