27 march, 2020

Ambassador Peter Michalko, the Head of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Moldova, hopes that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will not tell on Moldova disastrously.

In his interview with IPN on Thursday, the diplomat said that in these more difficult times, the European Union more intensely communicates with the authorities of the Republic of Moldova, with all the partners. For the EU, it is important and necessary for the rules concerning safety and health to be respected. Measures are taken to avoid contacts.

“Most of my colleagues work from home. It’s good that the possibility of continuing work with the help of information technology exists in this period. We maintain ties with the partners. Right today I had telephone conversations with members of the Government and other institutions. Also, we are active in the digital sphere,” stated the European official.

Speaking about the access of Moldovan produce to European markets in the current situation, Peter Michalko voiced confidence that the exports, as well as imports, will continue.

Touching on the economic consequences of the pandemic, the diplomat said that at the present stage it is impossible yet to predict the impact of the crisis. Hopefully, the consequences will be minimal. But now it is important that countries should focus on struggle against coronavirus spread and on questions of public health, for this is a priority now.

Ambassador Michalko stressed that in the pandemic situation, the European Union is not forgetting its partners, including Moldova. The EU takes necessary measures to protect the working population, to create conditions for enterprises to continue working and to survive this difficult period.

The European Union Delegation Head is convinced that when the CoV pandemic is overcome, the economic life will return to its usual frame, and the need for reforms will grow because this will help countries to return to their previous socio-economic level.

Peter Michalko underscored that the European Union has come to face a wave of misinformation being used against the European community. But the EU shall continue its work and open international cooperation, including with Moldova.
