ENERGOCOM EXTENDS CONTRACT WITH MGRES ON BUYING ELECTRICITY FOR MOLDOVA UNTIL END-JUNE

31 march, 2020

The state enterprise Energocom extended the contract with the Moldavskaya power plant [MGRES, in Transnistria, the Republic of Moldova’s largest energy producer] on supplying the electricity to Moldova in necessary volumes for 3 more months with the possibility of subsequent prolongation.

According to the company website, the choosing of one supplier was due to the fact that from the economic and financial points of view, the MGRES today is the only electricity supplier, able to cover all the needs of internal suppliers and operators of the Moldovan energy system alone.

According to the new contract conditions, since April 1, the average procurement price on electricity for Energocom, as well as the average price for suppliers and operators and the supplying of electricity to the mentioned economic agents, will be approximately 9% smaller than the one, applied within the current contracts until March 31.

Earlier, President Igor Dodon said that since April 1 the purchasing price on electricity for Moldova will be lowered 9% - to US$49.5 per 1 MWh and did not exclude that the tariffs for final consumers may also be lowered.

Within the current contracts, the Energocom was buying electricity from MGRES at US$52.4 per 1 MWh, while 15% - from the Ukrainian DTEK Pavlogradugol – at US$64.4, selling it to Moldovan suppliers and operators at an average price of US$54.2.

In conditions of the pandemic, the Commission for Emergency Situations cancelled the tenders, held annually for choosing supplier, and ordered the Energocom to personally conclude contracts on buying electricity from one supplier.
