GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE FUNDS FOR RESTORATION OF IRRIGATION SYSTEMS

14 august, 2020

The restoration of irrigation systems is one of the most pressing needs of farmers, and the government plans large budget allocations for this purpose already in 2021, as “otherwise, tens of millions lei will have to be allocated annually to compensate for the losses of agricultural producers”.

Prime Minister Ion Chicu stated this during a trip to the south of the republic, where he met with local authorities and farmers from Cahul, Stefan Voda and Causeni districts, and personally studied the consequences of the drought on local farms.

He said that the government has already allocated 200 million lei to subsidize farmers due to the loss of grain of the first group, which will allow the affected farms to receive in an average of 1050 lei per hectare of damaged crops.

“The allocation of this money in 2020 means a reduction of planned investments in other important sectors. The government will no longer provide additional funds to compensate for the losses of crops of group I, given that this year we have a budget deficit of 18 billion lei. However, we will soon offer another package of support measures for farmers," the prime minister promised, urging them to apply for subsidies as soon as possible and seek constructive cooperation with the authorities, since" protests and blocking roads are not the solution.
