INCOME FROM MOBILE TELEPHONY DECREASES BY ALMOST 10% IN MOLDOVA IN SECOND QUARTER

The volume of revenue from mobile telephony services in the second quarter decreased compared to the same period in 2019, by 9.9% and amounted to 707.1 million lei (US $ 42.6 million).

As data from the market regulator report, this is due to the fact that the number of users of mobile telephony services has decreased since the beginning of the year by 5%, to 4.2 million, and only 3.3 million of them were active.

A decrease in the number of users was registered with all the three mobile telephony operators. At Moldtelecom it decreased by 0.3%, to 406.2 thousand, at Moldcell - by 8.6%, to 1.4 million, and at Orange Moldova - by 3.6%, to 2.4 million As a result, the level of distribution of mobile telephony services in Moldova decreased by 8.2 percentage points, amounting to 126.6%.

The average monthly traffic per user (MoU) was 312 minutes (+ 8.9%), and the average duration of one call was 2.2 minutes in the second quarter. The largest number of minutes (on average, 365 per month) was accounted for by Moldtelecom user. At Orange Moldova this figure consisted in 353 minutes and at Moldcell – in 229 minutes.

The average monthly income per active user of mobile telephony (ARPU) decreased by 7.5% over the year, to 68.8 lei. Herwith, for Moldtelecom it was 74 lei, for Orange Moldova - 73.2 lei, and for Moldcell - 60 lei.

The market shares of mobile telephony operators have not changed. 64.4% of the market belongs to Orange Moldova, 29.5% - to Moldcell and 6.1% - to Moldtelecom.
