MOLDOVAGAZ STARTS PUMPING NATURAL GAS TO UKRAINE FOR STORAGE

02 octomber, 2020

For the first time ever, Moldovagaz [Moldova-Russia joint company] has begun pumping natural gas for storing in Ukraine by using the trans-Balkan corridor. The company is going to pump daily 1.5 to 3 million cubic meters of the fuel to be stored in Ukrainian underground gas reservoirs.

This October and November, Moldovagaz is projecting to pump about 100 million cubic meters for storing, so that in case of need the republic could supply the fuel to Moldovan consumers in December 2020 through February 2021.

The mainland Moldova (i.e. with an account of the Transnistrian region) consumes annually about 1 million cubic meters of natural gas, and 80% of that amount – in cold months of the year.

In the conditions of the threat of stoppage of the Russian gas transit through the Ukrainian territory in late 2019, Moldovagaz successfully realized Moldova’s first-ever alternative gas supply route for local consumers. For this, the gas-main pipeline Shebelinka-Dnepropetrovsk-Krivoy-Rog-Izmail was restored. That permitted receiving gas from the trans-Balkan corridor in a reverse mode through the Causeni gas-metering station.
