INVESTIGATION IN BANKING SECTOR SHOULD CONTINUE – BANKERS’ LEAGUE CHAIRMAN

12 may, 2015

Chairman of the Moldovan Bankers’ League Dumitru Ursu said on Monday night at the Publica TV channel that the investigation in banking sphere should be continued and necessary measures should be taken for returning the money that can still be returned.

“The Kroll Report says that a part of money can still be returned. This opinion is shared by heads of state institutions, who have corresponding powers. In this situation all the actions should be taken for achieving the result”, Ursu said.

He added he sees no reasons that Kroll to refuse continuing the investigation, even if the report was published without its consent.

“Kroll will continue investigating the stealing of billions from three Moldovan banks, if it receives such a proposal. Their reaction to publication of the report was modest. I do not think it will influence further cooperation with this company”, Ursu said.

On Monday, several Moldovan media outlets published Kroll answers to questions about Speaker Adrian Candu’s decision to publish the report without the authors’ consent.

“We never comment on results of investigations we conduct for our clients, as these are often confidential. Thus, we can not comment the contents of the report, prepared by Kroll for the or NBM’s consent”, says the Kroll answer.

The company knows that during the investigation, there were many requests to the NBM for presenting the information about the process of investigation and publish the report.

“Though we understand very well the society’s interest to this case, we would point on the fact that publishing of information in an unfinished independent investigation, based on facts, can threaten further investigation and its efficiency”, said Kroll.

The investigation by Kroll of money theft in three Moldovan banks began in early February and ended in April. The confidential 84-page report was presented to the National Bank, which ordered and paid the investigation. The NBM presented the document to the Government and the Parliament. Speaker Adrian Candu published the document on May 2, though a week earlier he was saying that the report is confidential and should not be made public.
