EUROPEAN UNION SHOULD STOP FUNDING MOLDOVA - EUROPEAN PARLIAMENTARIAN

21 july, 2017

The European Union should stop funding Moldova and should revise its Association Agreement concluded with Moldova for the adoption of the Law on introducing the mixed electoral system, presumes President of the European People's Party (EPP) Joseph Daul, who is utterly discontented about such ignoring of the Venice Commission recommendations by the Moldovan governing coalition.

Joseph Daul stated today that the law adoption in Moldova was "a blow on democracy".

"The European People's Party condemns the passing of the Law on the mixed electoral system introduction by the Parliament of Moldova because the Venice Commission recommended not switching over to a new system. It's a shame that a majority in the Parliament, 74 MPs [of 101], ignored that recommendation and have chosen for their compatriots an authoritarian rule, corruption and lawlessness", said the European parliamentarian.

Joseph Daul believes that the deputies from the Democratic Party, European People's Group and the Party of Socialists are promoting the interests of their mutual leader - Vlad Plahotniuc, instead of defending the rights and interests of citizens.

"The Democratic Party has grossly ignored European experts' recommendations. Moreover, drawbacks in the law have not been eliminated. The law was approved in haste and not transparently, disregarding the opinions of the opposition and citizenry. The Venice Commission also recommended not passing the law without a political consensus", stated Joseph Daul.

Meanwhile, Parliament Chairman Andrian Candu stated to journalists today that the Venice Commission recommendations had been taken into due account by 99%.
