MOLDOVA TO RECEIVE US$10 MILLION FOR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM REFORM

The World Bank (WB) Board of Directors approved a decision on additional financing reforms in the Moldova’s educational system and allocation of US$10 million.

According to the WB Office in Chisinau, it is called on supporting Moldovan Government’s efforts on further raising of quality and efficiency of primary and general secondary education.

According to the WB, a considerable number of Moldovan students, teachers and school managers will win from extending teaching activities, further equipping of scientific laboratories and equipment for the informational and communication technologies, as well as for training teachers and support personnel for contributing to inclusive education for students with special needs.

“One of Moldova’s greatest problems is the gap between the demand on the labor market and education, which currently is ensured by the Moldovan educational system. The development of skills is the basis component for our partnership with Moldova, as we tend to help people in Moldova acquire necessary skills and knowledge to get good jobs at home in order that they not to go abroad in seeking better life, leaving their families alone”, said WB Country Manager for Moldova Anna Akhalkatsi.

According to her, the raising of quality, relevance and efficiency of Moldova’s educational system is a priority for the World Bank Group in its support to the country’s economic growth and development.

According to the WB, a more educated labor force will help creating jobs, contribute to prosperous business environment and attract investments, which in its turn will raise the level and quality of citizens’ lives.

Infotag’s dossier: The projects of reforming the Moldovan education system started in 2013 and is made of three components: the first concerns the raising of the quality of education; the second – raising of sector’s efficiency at the expense of eliminating excessive capacities and creating a more economical education system, better equipped and which would satisfy labor market requirements; the third: the improvement of the Education Ministry’s potential of controlling the reform implementation. The reform is directed to reduction of poverty and stimulating the total growth, identified within the Systematic Country Diagnostics, implemented in 2016 by the WB and corresponds to the goals of the Moldova-2020 National Development Strategy. The project is designed to be implemented till 2019 and initially implied the provision of US$40 million.

Since the moment of Moldova’s joining the WB Group in 1992, the latter provided over US$1 billion for around 60 projects. Currently, the WB portfolio in the country includes ten active projects for US$341.5 million.
