DECISION ON GIVING STATE GUARANTEE TO NBM WAS NOT MINE – CHIRIL GABURICI

26 february, 2018

“It was not me who took the decision to provide state guarantees to the National Bank of Moldova for issuing credits to two problematic banks in 2015”, said Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici, who was Prime Minister in that period, at the Friday’s Parliament sitting.

He said that the common decision was taken by the National committee for financial stability after the NBM presented the situation in three problematic banks.

“Banks were debtors to around 1 million depositors. Given the crisis, what could have the non-provision of assistance to banks led to? When people were holding the last money mostly in the Banca de Economii, what could have happened if they woke up one day and found out that their bank is closed and will not return to them their money? All this could have led to a serious crisis”, said the former Premier.

He expressed confidence that back then, the committee took a right decision and any other person in his place would take the same decision.

Infotag’s dossier: Gaburici headed the Cabinet of Ministers on February 18 through June 12, 2015. In this period he signed the decision on providing to the NBM the state guarantee worth several billion of lei for crediting three problematic banks – Banca de Economii, Banca Sociala and Unibank. In total, the NBM provided over 13 million lei to these banks under governmental guarantees, though the volume of deposits to the population in three banks did not exceed 6 billion lei.
