NBM REPORTS THERE ARE OVER 71 MILLION COINS OF 1 BAN IN CIRCULATION IN MOLDOVA

Almost one-third of all the banknotes in circulation in Moldova are 1-leu banknotes. As of the end of 2018, this number was 90.28 million, or 25 banknotes per one citizen, including the newborn [except Transnistria].

According to the National Bank of Moldova, in comparison to 2017, the number of small bills fell 4.2 million. The second place belongs to banknotes with nominal value of 200 lei. They are most often issued by ATMs, thus there are almost 66.8 million of such banknotes in circulation.

The number of 1000-thousand-lei banknotes in circulation is the smallest – 1.29 million, as they have the biggest nominal value. Their number fell 40 thousand over a year.

In total, in Moldova there were 283.91 million banknotes totaling 23,606 million lei in circulation as of the end of 2018. A year ago these figures were 272.27 million totaling 20,905 billion lei.

As for coins, there are over 71 million coins with nominal value of 1 ban (0.01 lei) in circulation (+1 million), though the population are not using them for long time already. Most of coins in circulation are of 10 bans (0.10 lei), which is almost 30%, while less of all – 50 bans (0.50 lei) – 45.2 million (5.4%). In total, there are 833.73 million coins with total worth of 120.65 million lei. Their number grew 26 million over a year.

Also, in 2018 the NBM issued coins with total nominal value of 1, 2, 5 and 10 lei – in total 8.39 million coins with total worth of 10.57 million lei. They are aimed to replace the equivalent banknotes issued in 1993-2015 as the latter wear down.

As for commemorative banknotes and coins, the former were issued at a sum of 9.37 million lei exclusively in the form of 200-lei banknotes. Commemorative and anniversary coins were issued in the number of 100 thousand of silver and gold totaling 6.3 million lei.

In total, there are over 1.12 billion banknotes and coins totaling 23,753 million lei in circulation in Moldova against 1.08 billion worth 21,036 million lei in 2017.
