MOLDOVAN BANKS CLOSED ACCOUNTS OF ONLY TWO TRANSNISTRIAN BANKS YEAR TO DATE

16 september, 2019

The National Bank of Moldova (NBM) regards as false and ungrounded the disseminated information about the closing of accounts of Transnistrian enterprises by Moldovan banks.

As response to Infotag’s request to comment on the issue with accounts, high representative of the NBM said that the real picture is far from what media outlets are writing, in particular, the media from the PMR.

“Corresponding accounts of 67 economic agents were closed due to well-grounded reasons year to date. Among these there were two enterprises, who are registered in Moldova, but located and functioning in Transnistria”, the interlocutor said.

According to him, over this time, Moldova’s licensed banks refused to open accounts to 60 economic entities, among which one enterprise from Transnistria.

“I want to underline that the date on refusal to open bank accounts and the closing of the already opened, concerns all 11 commercial banks of Moldova, but not one or two separately taken banks”, the NBM representative maintains.

According to the NBM, accounts of 420 economic agents from Transnistria are opened for conducting import-export operations by means of Moldovan banks.

Moldovan banks may refuse to open an account or close the one already opened on the basis of internal regulations on combating money laundering and preventing terrorism financing. The observance of these regulations affected all clients of Moldovan banks, but not only those, who are located and functioning in the Transnistrian region.

“Moldovan banks were forced to adopt measures in relation to clients, who failed to abide by the requirements of these regulations”, said the Infotag interlocutor, stressing that the NBM will continue toughly controlling the observance by banks of requirements of the agreement on combating money laundering and terrorism financing, signed and ratified by the Republic of Moldova.
