MoF ASKS COMMERCIAL BANKS TO POSTPONE PAYMENTS ON CREDITS FOR CITIZENS

18 march, 2020

The Ministry of Finance called on Moldovan banks to study the possibility of suspending or postponement of the payments on credits, provided to citizens, for the period of January-May.

According to the MoF press release, the ministry’s leadership met with leadership of the National Bank of Moldova, as well as with representatives of systemic commercial banks on Tuesday.

Also, the ministry proposed that fines for the belated payment of due sums to be cancelled in these three months.

According to him, these measures would contribute to preservation of citizens’ payment capacity and reduce the negative consequences of pandemia for the banking system.

The MAIB has already reacted to these proposals and decided to postpone the payments on credits to physical persons and the interest rates on them, to support clients in the current situation with the Covid-19. These sums will be covered in June. The decision concerns consumption and mortgage credits, overdrafts, the LiberCard cards for payment in installments and the credit cards. Penalties and fines for non-payment of credits will not be imposed in March-May.
