MOLDOVA READY TO DISCUSS AND FULFILL IMPORTANT CLAUSES IN AGREEMENT ON IMF FUNDING – PREMIER CHICU

08 july, 2020

Moldova stands ready to discuss and fulfill a range of important items in the Agreement on funding so as to continue its cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, Prime Minister Ion Chicu stated on Tuesday during his online communication with a group of IMF experts led by Ruben Atoyan. The conversation marked the onset of RM-IMF negotiations on a new cooperation program.

Ion Chicu called the Fund’s financial assistance “extremely important for Moldova”, whose economy has seriously suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic. The previous program of cooperation with the IMF was successfully completed in the spring of 2020.

It is believed that the financial assistance with the Program will constitute US$550 million, a greater part of which will go for Budget support, and the rest – for replenishment of the country’s hard-currency reserve.

The online discussion participants pointed out an unstable political situation in Moldova that may hamper the realization of conditions from the IMF’s behalf. In that connection, the IMF mission is intending to hold discussions with some political forces represented in the Moldovan Parliament.

In September, the IMF leadership will consider the Memorandum being prepared currently.
