15 september, 2020

For the theft of a billion dollars from Moldovan banks in 2014-2015, should be punish those who directly participated in it and the money is to return to the country. EU Ambassador to Moldova Peter Michalko stated this on Monday.

Within the framework of the European Dialogues, at a meeting with representatives of the Moldovan media at the Infotag agency, the diplomat said that after the theft from the banking system, the Moldovan economy needed urgent support measures, since it was in a very bad state.

"For this, the republic needed help from its external partners, in particular, the European Union. It was important to attract large and serious investors to the banking sector," he said.

According to the diplomat, the investors who came to the systemic banks of Moldova were faced with the task of making the shareholder structure transparent.

"An equally important role was to ensure that the theft of money from banks would never happen again," said Peter Michalko, who believes that it is impossible to seek the return of the withdrawn money at the expense of foreign investors who came to the banks of the Republic of Moldova much later than the sad theft happened.

The diplomat most likely had in mind the investors of the first private bank of Moldova - Victoriabank, on a part of the assets of which (1.82 billion lei) the prosecutor's office seized, suspecting its previous leadership of money laundering. Banca Transilvania entered this bank in January 2018, having bought 39.2% of Victoriabank shares on the public market. Together with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, they own more than two-thirds of the shares of this bank, which is a part of the four largest financial institutions in Moldova.
