MOLDOVAN POLITICIANS COMMENT NEW RUSSIAN PRESIDENT’S COMING
Chisinau. Leading local politicians presume the yesterday’s change of presidents in Russia will bring nothing new for the Republic of Moldova. The Timpul [Time] newspaper of Chisinau has published their opinions today.
The leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDPM) MP Dumitru Braghis, the pre-Communist ex-Prime Minister of Moldova, said the Moldo-Russian relations will not suffer any change with the change of leader in Moldova, for they are largely determined by the contents, domestic political orientation and tonality of Chisinau’s external policy.
“We must find a common language, we must not live in the conditions of a constant confrontation and strain, as this is presently taking place in Moldova's relations with other countries, including with Russia”, Braghis said.
Liberal Democratic Party leader MP Vladimir Filat said he expects no substantial changes in Russia’s home or foreign policies, including in relations with Russia, under Russia President Dmitry Medvedev because all the same it will be Putin who will be determining Russia’s policy.
Former Moldovan Parliament Speaker, Democratic Party leader MP Dumitru Diakov said, “Medvedev is a new-generation politician with a fresher mentality, a politician not involved into unpleasant events… But we must realize that our bilateral relations depend not only on Moscow but Moldova as well, depend on which position we have, and on how we defend our interests. Naturally, Russia will continue imposing its stance on us, for that’s how all great powers do, no matter who rules there”.
Moldova's ex-Ambassador to Russia, Deputy Chairman of the National Liberal Party Anatol Taranu said the Moldo-Russian relations will see no cardinal changes in the near future. Simply, the power center in Russia is shifting from the Kremlin [where the presidential office is] over to the White House [government building], and at least for one more year Vladimir Putin’s influence in Russia will be crucial.
MP Leonid Bujor of the Moldova Noastra Alliance said the new Russia President, Dmitry Medvedev, is a man from the Putin team, and Putin is becoming Russia’s Prime Minister, “so I foresee no radical changes. I hope, however, that Russia will be demonstrating more correctness in the main problem where Moscow can influence positively – the Transnistrian conflict settlement”.
