GERMAN PARLIAMENT TO DISCUSS SITUATION IN TRANSNISTRIA
Chisinau. After summer recess, the German Bundestag Commission for External Affairs will discuss situation in Transnistria as well, not only in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Press Secretary for External Relations Eckart von Klaeden said during the debate organized by the German Marshall Fund shortly before the Extraordinary EU Summit on Georgia held last Monday.
Von Klaeden said, “Transnistria once again attracted our attention after the conflict in Georgia. The problem is, the Bundestag is still on recess, and has not convened since the break up of the conflict. Personally I am going to put on the agenda of the first day of the Commission’s sitting the question on the situation in Transnistria as well”.
In July 2008, the Bundestag passed a Resolution in support of Moldova’s European integration. The document said Germany welcomes and supports Moldova’s striving for integration into the European Union. The Resolution also referred to OSCE data, according to which 20 thousand tons of Russian ammunition and military equipment is still stored at warehouses in Transnistria. Despite its 1999 OSCE Istanbul Summit commitments, Russia is continuing deploying its military subdivisions in the Transnistrian region. Due to this reason, Russia plays a special role in resolving the Transnistria conflict.
The European Union must continue fulfilling its commitments to the 5+2 negotiation process and in the framework of the European Union Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) for the sake of resolving the conflict, the Resolution said.
