UKRAINIAN FOREIGN MINISTER OPTIMISTIC ABOUT TRANSNISTRIAN QUESTION
Kiev – Chisinau. Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter Poroshenko does not regard the Transnistria problem as something insoluble. In his interview with Kommersant-Ukraina published on Tuesday, he dispelled the opinion of those who think that the 20-year-old conflict will hardly ever be settled.
“I am sure there is no problem solving it. None of the sides involved is interested in it. I am making this conclusion proceeding from Russia’s position and from the experience of the negotiations, which I myself conducted in 2005 as Security Council Secretary”, Poroshenko said.
However, he failed to mention even an approximate time, in which he believes the conflict could be settled, “for this depends not solely on Ukraine”. Besides this, he added, the 5+2 talks have not yet restarted at a high political level.
“But there are declarations being made that this will happen in the nearest future. The talk resumption will be promoted by the soon-to-be completion of the [presidential] election process in Ukraine and by the resumption of dialogs with Russia and Romania, which we are so hopeful of”, said the Ukrainian foreign minister.
Peter Poroshenko believes the demarcation of the Transnistrian section of the Moldo-Ukrainian border can be completed within 1-2 years, depending on financing.
“I hope the demarcation group will convene for a meeting in February, and will take corresponding decisions. And concerning the Dnestrovskaya hydro-accumulating electric station, we shall achieve a compromise that will suit both Ukraine and Moldova”, said Peter Poroshenko.
