TRANSNISTRIAN SETTLEMENT IS RESTRAINED WITH CHISINAU’S UNCERTAINTY – LAVROV

TRANSNISTRIAN SETTLEMENT IS RESTRAINED WITH CHISINAU’S UNCERTAINTY – LAVROV

Moscow, July 9, 2010 (Infotag).   Progress in the Transnistrian conflict settlement work is being restrained by the puzzling uncertainty concerning who takes decisions in Chisinau presently, thinks Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov.

In his interview with the Mir [World] television and radio company run jointly by CIS member states, the Russian foreign minister voiced pity that the governing alliance in Moldova would not be able to formulate a sound common position even after so many months of governing the country.

“The acting president [Mihai Ghimpu] makes statements, which should actually be interpreted as his disagreement with the very existence of the Moldovan nation. This causes a question:  does he believe in the Moldovan statehood? If no, then the Transnistrians would hardly wish to unify with a foreign state together with the rest of Moldova. To hope for this would be just utopian”, said Sergey Lavrov.

He remarked, Moldova will soon have another parliamentary election, and will hopefully come to have a long-waited political stability, “and only after that it will be possible to make conclusions concerning Chisinau’s plans”.
