MOLDOVA CONFERS TOP HONOUR ON “FIGHTERS AGAINST TOTALITARIAN COMMUNIST REGIME”

24.08.2010

Moldova’s acting President and Parliamentary speaker Mihai Ghimpu has signed a decree of awarding the highest award of Moldova, Order of the Republic, to “a group of fighters against the totalitarian Communist occupation regime”.

According to the Presidential press service, the awards were given “as a sign of deep gratitude to those who, being witnesses of the tragic consequences of the Soviet-German Non-Aggression Pact and its additional secret protocol signed on August, 23, 1939, risked their lives and freedom but put up a resistance to the totalitarian Communist occupation regime after 28 June 1940 [when the current territory of the Republic of Moldova became part of the Soviet Union] and were condemned to death penalty or were given prison sentences for thier courage and patriotic spirit”.

Among awarded are writer Nicolae Costenco, condemned in 1942 to 7-year imprisonment; 13 members of the organization Arcasii lui Stefan [Stephen’s Archers], in particular, Pimen Domascan, condemned in 1947 to 25-year imprisonment; 3 members of the organization Sabia Dreptatii [Saber of the Justice], for example, Eugeniu Gutu, condemned in 1950 to 25-year imprisonment; 24 members of the Freedom Party, for example, Victor Andreev, sentenced in 1951 to death; head of the Sfatul Tarii [State Council] Panteleimon Halippa sentenced in 1952 to 25-year imprisonment.

The acting Moldovan President’s brother, a member of the National-Patriotic Front Gheorghe Ghimpu, who was sentenced to 6 year of prison in 1972, is also among those who were conferred the top honour.

Almost all persons from the list are awarded post mortem, excepting Valeriu Graur – member of the National-Patriotic Front sentenced in 1972 to 4-year imprisonment and Alexander Soltoianu sentenced in 1972 to 3-year of prison.

Infotag's dossier: The day before Ghimpu was going to sign a decree of condemning the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, but later he changed his mind and said that journalists misunderstood him.
