PRIME MINISTER VLADIMIR FILAT’S PRESENCE DOES NOT SAVE SHERIFF FROM DEFEAT
25.08.2010
Moldova's football champion Sheriff Tiraspol has failed to achieve its cherished wish – to reach the team stage of the Champion League on Tuesday.
Sheriff lost to the Swiss team Basel in its own playing field with the score of 0:3 in the fourth qualifying round. A week ago, it was defeated by Basel 0:1.
Moldovan footballers were not helped even by the fact, for the first time in 20 years, they were supported by Moldova’s Prime Minister Vladimir Filat. During the match Filat talked to other Sheriff’s football fans - Transnistrian president Igor Smirnov and state security minister Vladimir Antiufeev.
All attempts of the Moldovan leadership to visit the region without preliminary agreement with local authorities usually failed till this moment. Besides, Vice-Premier Victor Osipov let know beforehand that Filat will visit Tiraspol to support Moldovan footballer.
