MOLDOVA INTRODUCING NEW SYSTEM OF PAYMENTS AT HOSPITALS

02.09.2010

Moldova is introducing a new system of payment for services at hospitals, the DRG (Diagnostic Related Group) system, within the framework of the Health and Social Services Project under way thank to the World Bank-provided financial assistance.

Project Coordinator Oleg Hancu told your Infotag correspondent that the cost of treatment at hospitals will now depend not on the number of days the insured person has spent at the hospital, and not depending on the cost of the medicines used for treatment, but on diagnosis, age, illness gravity, and reasons of discharge from the hospital.

“The first phase of system introduction is over. The pilot project is being implemented at 6 hospitals – all-republican, municipal and raion ones”, said Hancu.

In his words, the system, used in many European countries, is going to be fully implemented in Moldova within 2 years – at all hospitals, for which the World Bank has provided US$700 thousand.
