DIRECT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IS THREAT TO MOLDOVA’S INDEPENDENCE – VORONIN

Switching over to direct election of the head of state is only putting the Republic of Moldova’s independence in jeopardy, maintains Communist Party leader MP Vladimir Voronin, who was the country’s president in 2001 through 2009.
Voronin appeared on the National Television on Thursday night, and once again called upon compatriots to boycott the September 5 referendum on amending Article 78 in the Constitution.
“If the referendum is recognized as valid, the country will come to face a really sad perspective. After this one, there will necessarily follow another referendum – on secession from the CIS [Commonwealth of Independent States, uniting 12 of the former Soviet Union’s 15 republics, except three Baltic States], then another referendum – on unification with Mother Romania, then one more – on Moldova’s accession to NATO, and many other foolish things, which will leave nothing of the country created by [medieval Moldovan king] Stefan cel Mare and Bogdan the Founder, nothing of the state created in 1940, and of the independent republic which we have been building last 20 years. I am calling upon you all to have no finger in this referendum. Better stay at home, do your daily home work, and get prepared for the coming winter, which is going to be hard”, said Vladimir Voronin.
He explained that without parliamentary majority’s support, a nation-elected president will be unable to ensure the changes for the better, which the ruling Alliance for European Integration dishes out.
“The point is not in a form of governance, but in who governs the country. My eight-year-long experience of presidency shows convincingly that no matter how president is elected, he will be not able to do anything without parliamentary majority’s backing. This is precisely why the chief thing we all must demand is the holding of an early parliamentary election. Imagine: 17% voters say yes at this regretful referendum, and the Constitution will be amended straightaway. Such things cannot happen in even a single European country”, maintained Vladimir Voronin.
The ex-president is convinced that the September 5 referendum has been organized not for Moldova’s good but in the interests of the 4 party leaders in the Alliance for European Integration.
“This is a referendum for Ghimpu, Filat, Urechean and Lupu. We have nothing to do at it. Transition to a direct election of president is but a lie, a trap for voters. Don’t you remember that the independent Moldova’s first president Mircea Snegur was elected by the general vote? And what we got shortly after? A war between Snegur and Prime Minister Andrei Sangheli, and a war in Transnistria. The same was with the second president, Petru Lucinschi, who belonged to one and the same nest [socio-political movement Rindunica (The Swallow)] like did ex-Speaker Dumitru Diacov, but the two had waged a mortal war against one another for long 4 years, during which Lucinschi constantly complained he had lacked authority”, reminded Vladimir Voronin.
