HISTORIAN ION VARTA PUBLISHES DOCUMENTS ON JULY 1949 DEPORTATIONS

25.03.2011

Moldovan historian Ion Varta, a member of the Commission for Condemnation of the Totalitarian Communist Regime aka Ghimpu Commission, has issued the first volume of documents, which he has called “Mass Deportations from the Moldovan SSR of July 5-9, 1949. Operation South”. The work was recommended for publication by the Pro Memoria Institute of Public History.

The 918-page book contains over 350 documents on how the Stalinist Soviet regime was working out that operation of deporting certain groups of Moldovan SSR population, on how the operation was carried out in July 1949, how the people were transported to Siberia, and how those who dared seek justice or protest were shot down en route and after.

The author says that over 90% documents included into the book have been made public for the first time. Over 80% of them were provided by the Ministry of the Interior archives and the rest came from the Information and Security Service – the former KGB. Access to the papers became possible upon their declassification in 2010.

Ion Varta says he disposes of achieve documents enough for two more books on the July 1949 deportations alone – to consist of over 2.5 thousand pages.
