MOLDOVAN HISTORIANS DISCUSS ANNEXATION OF BESSARABIA BY RUSSIAN EMPIRE

24.10.2011

Annexation of Bessarabia by the Russian Empire in 1812 and its consequences for Bessarabian Romanians was the subject matter of the roundtable conference organized jointly by Moldova State University, Pro Memoria Institute of Public History, Ion Creanga State Pedagogical University and the National Association of Young Historians.

The forum considered development of the territory between the Rivers Prut and Dniester in 1812 through 1917, the Russian tsarist policy of de-nationalization of the Bessarabian Romanians, the peasantry question, exodus of the population from Bessarabia, pouring light on the biographies of some outstanding Bessarabian personalities.

Dr. Anatol Petrencu, Director of the Pro Memoria Institute of Public History (and First Deputy Chairperson of the Actiunea Europeana [European Action] socio-political movement), highlighted the need for an objective interpretation of Bessarabia’ past, particularly nowadays when historians can present their viewpoints and ideas without fear or hindrance.

“For deeper studying of the issue, it is necessary to work out a program of archival researches that should lead to the publication of materials about the annexation period. Also, we should unfold propaganda of historic knowledge among broad population masses by publishing books, articles in newspapers. We should organize weekly programs on television and radio, scientific conferences and (why not?) should shoot a film about the period when Bessarabia was a part of the Russian Empire in 1812 through 1917. This popularization of knowledge should be done very delicately, and it should not downgrade to a primitive brainwashing”, he said.

Professor Petrencu suggested declaring 2012 as a Year of Bessarabia annexation by the Russian Empire.

Infotag’s dossier:   The Prut-Dniester interfluve, named Bessarabia in 1813, was annexed by the Russian Empire the year before as a result of the Russia-Turkey war of 1806-1812. Before that, this territory was an integral part of Tara Moldovei – a medieval Moldovan state founded in the 14th century between Eastern Carpathian Mountains, the Rivers Dniester and Danube, and the Black Sea.
