18 april, 2014

Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti has called upon the European Council to sign the EU-RM Association Agreement, including its essential component – the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA), by the end of May 2014.

Timofti wrote in his letter to the European Council that the Agreement could well be signed in the framework of the conference of the heads of EU state and government that will be held on May 27.

The Moldovan President has sent analogous letters to President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Durao Barroso and to Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission.

Timofti welcomed the Council’s decision to accelerate the Agreement signature with Moldova proceeding from the domestic situation and regional developments as a whole.

The President expressed gratitude to Council members for the backing, including the possibility given to Moldova citizens to begin, from April 28, traveling to Europe without visas.

As already reported by Infotag, initially the Association Agreement was going to be signed in September 2014. Then the Standing Chairman of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy said the document could be concluded before August. And ultimately, European officials began mentioning June 2014.
