EU URGES REMOVING TRADE BARRIERS BETWEEN RUSSIA AND MOLDOVA UNDER WTO RULES

31 july, 2014

The European Union “looks forward to the rapid removal of obstacles in trade between Moldova and Russia” and urges to eliminate these obstacles “in accordance with WTO rules”.

In comments on the proposed measures on further liberalization of access to the EU market, in response to trade restrictions imposed by the Government of the Russian Federation it is also noted that “the provisional application of the Association Agreement, including DCFTA will begin on September 1”.

“In addition to DCFTA, the European Commission is currently working on measures to support its partner – Moldova – in further liberalization of access to the EU market. The EU regrets about the number of recent decisions of the Russian authorities in connection with the prohibition on import of certain Moldovan goods, in particular fruits, to the Russian market”, stated in the comments.

As it was already reported by the “Infotag” agency, beginning from July 21, Russia imposed a ban on supplies of Moldovan fruits and vegetables to the Russia market due to the frequent finding pests in it. Three days earlier, Russia had banned the import of canned products from the Republic of Moldova. In this context, Moldovan producers have already announced multimillion losses due to the inability to sale products, which were earlier sold in Russia, as well as about the impossibility to return credits, taken previously under production. From August 1, the European Union will twice increase quotas on export to the EU market for agricultural producers from Moldova. The European Union has decided to double duty-free export quotas agreed in accordance with the Agreement on deep and comprehensive free trade area: for apples – from 40 thousand to 80 thousand tons, for plums – from 10 thousand to 20 thousand tons, grapes – from 10 thousand to 20 thousand tons.
