​MOLDOVA IS EXAMPLE FOR PRO-EUROPE COUNTRIES TO FOLLOW – FEDERICA MOGHERINI

Moldova is an example for states with pro-Europe strivings to follow because the republic has chosen a road to the West but simultaneously stands for preserving good relations with the East, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini stated during her meeting with Moldovan Prime Minister Iurie Leanca in Chisinau on Monday.

According to the Moldovan governmental press service, the interlocutors discussed Moldova’s European agenda, the progress of reforms, attraction of foreign assistance for reforming the Moldovan judiciary, Moldova’s efforts to diversify energy sources, situation in region etc.

Federica Mogherini has arrived in Moldova practically right after her appointment as the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, at which post she will shortly replace her predecessor Catherine Ashton.

Leanca congratulated Federica Mogherini upon her appointment as the head of the European diplomacy and wished her success on that post.

In the course of their conversation, Iurie Leanca raised the question of the Moldovan diaspora in Italy, and stressed the need to sign an inter-governmental agreement on the social protection of compatriots.

Federica Mogherini complimented the Moldovan community in Italy, saying that the diaspora has been fairly united and enjoys the local population’s respect.

The Italian foreign minister is attending the 9th meeting of the Group for support of Moldova’s European action. This is her first visit to Moldova. Federica Mogherini will assume the office of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on November 1.
