ROMANIA PRESIDENT WANTS TO RECEIVE MOLDOVAN CITIZENSHIP, STANDS FOR UNIFICATION

31 octomber, 2014

Romanian President Traian Basescu has stated he wants to acquire the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova and desires unification of the two countries.

Basescu stated in his interview with the Moldova-1 public television cast last Thursday night, “After the parliamentary elections in Moldova [November 30], I will go to Chisinau for a farewell visit. I will use that opportunity to submit an application for acquiring the Republic of Moldova citizenship. A few days ago, I discussed this question with President Timofti. I really want this, categorically. It would be a great honor for me. It would be a symbolic gesture if the Republic of Moldova authorities grant me the citizenship”.

Speaking of a possible unification of the two countries, Basescu stated that deep in his heart, he desires very much such a merger to happen, but admitted that unification may become a reality “only if the Romanians of our two countries wish this”.

“I wish the unification because I am not renouncing the idea that we are one nation living in two independent states. When a majority of the Romanians from both countries come to wish to be one country, then indeed this will happen because nobody can deprive a nation its right to unification. With us, and especially in Moldova, not all conditions seem to have been created for this”, stressed Traian Basescu.
